John McAuliff

John McAuliff founded in 1985 the Fund for Reconciliation and Development, a not-for-profit non-governmental organization located near New York City, and is its executive director.   www.ffrd.org

He worked for twenty years to end unilateral embargoes and to foster post-war US understanding with Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.  His primary focus now is to achieve the same goal with Cuba which he visited in January for the tenth time in as many years. He offers a unique comparative perspective between Cuba and Indochina on the relationship between bilateral political, cultural and economic normalization and internal reform.

McAuliff is the author of op ed articles, blogs on www.thehavananote.com, has been interviewed by CNN International and NPR, and is quoted as a source for news articles.  He is active with Washington based groups and educational institutions seeking to change US policy on Cuba.

McAuliff has spoken in the past year at Cuba conferences organized by the Brookings Institution and the University of North Carolina and at national Trade Shows and conventions sponsored by the American Society of Travel Agents, National Tour Association and Educational Travel Community.   He is the first American to participate in Cuba's annual International Tourism Fair and organized a meeting to discuss US-Cuba educational exchange at the Montreal convention of the Latin American Studies Association.

John McAuliff served as Peace Corps volunteer in Peru and for a decade as director of the Indochina Program in the Peace Education Division of the American Friends Service Committee, a Quaker humanitarian and development organization based in Philadelphia.  He is a graduate of Carleton College and of the Institute for Policy Studies.
